Behind the Dam Xtra

A closer view of the dam. This is as close as the public is allowed.

A view of the top of the dam — you can see Hartwell Lake peeking over the edge.

Not that I know what all this is — but related to the generation of hydroelectric power obviously. 🙂

A view from the lake side of the dam. You can see from the bank and the concrete how low the lake is. Residents and lake business owners are furious that the U.S. Corps of Engineers, who manages the dam, lowered the lake level over the 2006-2007 winter. (Who knows what they will do this winter.) Lake stakeholders claim the corps needlessly lowered the lake “to prepare for any flood” when we’ve consistently had drought after drought. I don’t know the official story. That’s just the scuttlebut. There’s also the gossip that we no longer need so much hydroelectric power and the corp shouldn’t release so much water to make electricity. Who knows. Competing stakeholders will continue to fight. I’m imagine eventually South Carolina and Georgia will fight one another for rights to the water and the lake. Atlanta is very thirty. Fortunately that isn’t happening too badly yet. For now, the red clay “bath water ring” sure makes the lake look sad.
