City Hall

I’m so glad Anderson’s downtown is attractive — even inspirational. I imagine I’ll be shooting it until my camera shuts down or I move. Neither of which I anticipate. 🙂

R.J., the Good Samaritan

Filed under: Details — lessie @ 6:23 pm

Last night around 5 p.m. or so, I got out of my car (which I parked practically in the middle of the road!) to check out my neighbor’s trash. I was in a hurry, see, because I spied a green metal chair I really wanted. My sweet little dog jumped up on the window ledge and engaged the automatic locks. Yes. She locked me out. Efficiently. Completely. My purse, my keys, my phone. All inside the car with the sweet dog. Me? Outside with my neighbor’s leavings. (I did find a really cool yard chair.) Fortunately, the neighbor also left wire hangers. We straightened one and waved to the fellow neighbors who now had to pull around my car in the street at they waved back and craned their necks, watching as we poked our weak little wire at the window casing. My neighbor, Jon, was kind enough to try his hand at the window. His wife, Kristin, was generous enough to keep us company with conversation. (Having a group around helped alleviate the embarrassment, as folks continued to drive past.) And then another trash picker pulled up. “I’m just looking for scrap metal,” he said, as he grabbed something from the neighbor’s pile and threw it in the bed of his truck. Truck. Metal. Well-formed hat. This guy is probably handy, I thought. And sure enough, he looked at all of us staring at him, and he said, “Oh, do you need help?”

Thank you, R.J.! After minutes of effort, you got my car unlocked — and saved me $75-$100 in locksmith fees. “I like to help people when I can,” he said, as he drove off into the sunset. Many, many thanks, R.J. 🙂

Happy Boxing Day

Filed under: Winter & Christmas — lessie @ 3:27 am

No, I really don’t know what Boxing Day is…but I hear it’s the day after Christmas, and really, shouldn’t the day after Christmas have a title?

From One to Another

View of the historic Anderson County Courthouse (1889) from the door of the current courthouse. The dark framing is from the “overhang” of the modern building. For Andersonians, having their city as the seat of the county – and the hub of county business and judicial goings-on – means jury duty can be a local drive, including paying taxes, visiting the assessor’s office, and looking up old deeds. Criminal, civil, and family court cases “go down” in the modern courthouse as well. (Astute viewers will notice that this was taken before the lighting of the 2009 Christmas tree. Hope to get a shot of it brightly lit before the end of the season.)

Who IS a Guardian ad litem?

Filed under: Anderson County — lessie @ 6:50 pm

Nicely dressed, huh? On the left is Cindy Sauer and the right is Susan Johnson. In the middle is an Anderson County Bailiff — and I predicatablly forgot his name! <smacking head against monitor> In this picture, Cindy and Amy have just stepped outside a court room  into the lobby of the Anderson County Courthouse.

Cindy and Amy, along with a volunteer advocate from Anderson County, are the posse who speak in the best interest of Anderson children, children who the state of South Carolina has removed from their families, because of allegations of abuse or neglect. If you are like me, I had no idea such a group existed. Every time a child in Anderson County is removed by the Court from his or her home, a child advocate — a guardian ad litem — is appointed by the court to speak in the child’s best interest. Cindy coordinates such Anderson County volunteers. And Amy serves as the guardian ad litem’s court attorney.

More Anderson County volunteers are needed! If you want to give your time to a child in need — usually only a few hours a month — then consider volunteering. You can literally stand in the gap for a hurting child. See the Anderson County Volunteer Guardian ad litem Office for more information.

If you love S.C., you’ll understand

If you love S.C., you’ll understand this pic isn’t an ecouragement to drink a particular beverage, so much as a statement of pride in our state flag.  🙂

And ALSO at PetSmart on the day below, but inside, was this interesting pet! My friend April took this pic, because I didn’t want to get close to him. The owner said he is currently in molting phase and that he loves people. WHAT is he? (Another view of this pic is here.)
