Berry House Gift Shop

Filed under: Restaurants and Commerce, Winter & Christmas — lessie @ 10:05 pm

Call me a moth to Christmas lights. One night last week, I walked downtown and enjoyed a view I normally see passing at 25 miles an hour. Berry House Gift Shop was beautiful with wreaths in the upstairs windows and “icicle” lights hanging from the store’s “porch.” I got closer to take the above pic and stumbled upon a plaque I had never seen before.

In the brick adjacent to the Berry House is a faded piece of metal dated 1976. Its title reads “Fant’s Bookstore — 1851.” It reports that Fant’s Bookstore is the oldest business firm in Anderson. Not seeing a book store near by, I’m guessing it went out of business sometime after this plaque was afixed. Fant’s Book Store was run by the same family, 4th and 5th generation Fant descendants, for 125 years — as of 1976, at least. Pretty cool.
