Nature’s perseverance

Filed under: Downtown — lessie @ 2:58 pm

I love the way nature finds the tinest crooks and crannies to sprout life! This is a building downtown patiently awaiting renovation.

Peek Hole

Filed under: Downtown — lessie @ 3:38 pm

Anderson’s downtown is slowly and surely being rennovated. Most of it looks great. This store front is awaiting purchase, I imagine. It’s been completely gutted — perhaps because of fire? To prevent passersby from falling to the grassy basement floor, plexiglass covers the doorways and most of the windows. The bare brick walls and open sky where ceiling once was present quite an elegant picture that only age can provide. One section of a window or door, however, is covered with plywood. Someone cut a peek hole right at eye level. To see the view beyond click here.

Literary delight

Filed under: Downtown — lessie @ 3:57 am

I was delighted to stumble upon this chalked declaration on a sidewalk downtown. While the movies are wonderful, I love the books. Perhaps it is J.R.R. Tolkien who still lives — in his writings. 🙂

Memorial Day

Filed under: Historic District, Markers, & Flags — lessie @ 3:11 pm

Today the U.S. observes Memorial Day, with flags held at half-mast until noon. I love the British Commonwealth tradition of the poppy to commemorate its war dead. I could find none to photograph, so I hope the flags at half-mast are a suitable tribute.

Yarn Mill

A seemingly closed business located strategically by the tracks, just west of downtown. Taken before spring was fully in, when many leaves had not sprouted on the trees.

The goods

Filed under: Jockey Lot — lessie @ 3:01 pm

Denton at Greenville Daily Photo asked what we buy at the Jockey Lot so early on Saturday mornings. I’m afraid, as much as we can get our hands on. 🙂 This is an older picture featuring the feet and stash of a dear friend who is moving to Columbia. Fortunately, there is a Daily Photo Blog there too. 🙂 Rick produces Columbia and More out the captial city of South Carolina.

This stately home is on O’Neal Street, in a part of my “extended” neighborhood. It’s on a large lot surrounded by small subdivision lots, on which are ordinary subdivision-type houses from the 1940s and beyond. Needless to say, this house is quite out of place. I think my jaw dropped when I discovered it one day on a walk. Was this house on a farm originally? When was this house built? Who lived there? The house winks at me in answer. 🙂

Civic Center Glass

Filed under: Parks — lessie @ 6:41 pm

I find this building hard to photograph. There are necessary trash cans and cigarette containers at the entrances — which make quite an ugly decor. In addition, there are tall green trees in front of the building, making a long-range shot nearly impossible. I decided to go for a close up. Don’t know if I like it…but I tried. Will try again. Something about those angles are intriguing. Another shot is here.

In memory

Impromptu memorial on side of Hwy 76 / Clemson Blvd., heading into Anderson. I took this shot on Saturday and by Monday, the memorial was gone. Another angle is here.

Anderson County Detention Center. Located across the road from the Civic Center, within the city limits. I imagine this is the exercise “yard.” The amount of razor wire is amazing. The fence closest to the viewer is a secondary perimeter, I’m guessing. A sign on the fence says simply, “Stay Back from Fence.” I took the picture around 7 a.m. You can see the light beginning to shine on the wire. Another view is here
