I was shocked to stumble upon such an old cemetery behind a relatively modern-looking church: Salem Baptist. (Later I found on the church’s main building a sign showing the church was organized in 1798. Very old for this area.) In the cemetery, there are several unmarked graves upon which someone placed numbered granite plaques. It appears this sign designating the cemetery as circa 1840 was also placed in the last several decades. Makes me wonder who made this cemetery their mission of preservation. A Burriss, I suspect.
Pictures of the church, unmarked graves, and others are here.
It might have been that family, or just someone who is a die hard geneologist. My aunt hunted up a grandfather that had been buried in Oregon during the depression and had a stone placed. She has a business called “Search on Site”…loves geneology.
